Introduction

If you’re considering a career in as a lash technician, you’ve stumbled on to the right part of the internet. This ultimate guide will be your go-to resource, covering lash types, materials, essential lash supplies, lash trays, and steps to kickstart your lash career.

What are Eyelash Extensions?

Eyelash extensions are individual fibers – usually synthetic, silk, or mink – that are meticulously attached to each natural eyelash using semi-permanent adhesive. These extensions enhance the length, fullness, and curl of natural eyelashes, creating captivating eyes and an elevated, put together look.

Different Types of Eyelash Extensions

Becoming a master at the art lash extensions means being able to tailor lash styles to individual clients.

  1. Classic Lashes: Single extensions attached to each natural lash. Ideal for a subtle, natural enhancement.

  2. Volume Lashes: Multiple extensions are adhered to each natural lash, creating a dramatic and voluminous look.

  3. Hybrid Lashes: A blend of classic and volume lashes, hybrid lashes offer a versatile look with density, texture and fluffiness.

  4. Mega Volume Lashes: Similar to volume, but with even more extensions per natural lash for an ultra-glamorous, intense, dark look.

Materials of Eyelash Extensions

There are a few different types of eyelash extensions that are made from different materials.

  1. Synthetic Lashes: Most commonly used, and made with PBT fibers. They’re made to mimic silk and mink lashes and you can choose between matte or glossy finishes. Now, they’re even available in various colours.

  2. Silk Lashes: Softer and more porous, great for a natural look and comfortable wear.

  3. Mink Lashes: Just like the name, mink lashes are actually made from hairs of minks, which are a small type of animal that is known for their soft and silky hairs. When mink extensions used to be popular, they represented luxury and were incredibly fine and soft, resembling natural lashes. These days, people are now moving away from getting mink extensions as society is now leaning towards more cruelty-free and earth-friendly products and practices.

  6. Microfiber Brushes and Mascara Wands: Necessary for cleaning and grooming the lashes and for after-care kits for your clients,

  7. Jade Stone, Glue Ring or Glue Trays: These tools hold the adhesive during the application process. I prefer to use Glue Trays.

  8. Eye Pads and Tape: Protect the client’s lower lashes and eyelids during application.

  9. Bright Lamp and Ergonomic Chair: These are vital for visibility and ensuring comfort during the application process.

Training and Certification for Lash Artists

Becoming a lash technician requires skill and precision. enrolling in a reputable lash program for a hands-on experience and certification is a must. The eyes are a highly sensitive organ and when lash extensions are done improperly, damage to the natural lashes and infections can occur. And since we are working with sharp tools and chemicals near the eyes, you absolutely need to go through training and be a certified professional before you start taking clients.

Most lash training courses are an intense 2-3 days of learning and practicing. While you’ll have a good foundation on how to start lashing, you’re bound to have many questions once you start practicing and working on clients. I highly recommend doing your research and choosing an educator that will stick around to answer any questions you may have after you’ve finished taking your course. Being certified not only boosts your confidence, credibility and reputation but also equips you with the necessary knowledge to ensure client satisfaction and safety. And, please remember, the art of lashing is not an easy skill to learn, it takes a lot of practice to get used to the micro-movements it requires. If you feel like you can’t do it after you’ve taken your course, it just means that you need to keep practicing and pushing through the challenges.
